The journey of Serum Institute of India Ltd started in the year 1966 under the proficient guidance of Mr Cyrus Poonawala. He developed the Organization with the purpose of manufacturing life saving immunizing medicines, which at that point in time was not available to the common man since most were imported and OUT of the grab of the common man.
OVER PERIOD OF TIME it achieved the initial target by manufacturing enough drugs, which brought anti tetanus, and anti snake venom serum within the reach of the people. Slowly and steadily the vaccines for Diptheria, Tetanus and Pertusis followed by the vaccines for the measles, mumps and Rubella also found its presence in the market courtesy this firm. With the passage of time it grew up to be one of the largest manufacturers of vaccines. The fangs of diseases like BCG, r- Hepatitis B, Tetanus , Rubella, Measles and Mumps were busted by the vaccines manufactured by the company. All the vaccines manufactured by them are accredited by the World
Health Organization and are currently used in the immunization programs in about 140 nations across the globe. The first acquisition of a Dutch pharmaceutical giant, Bilthoven Biologicals proved to be a great beneficial proposition for the company. That ensured the expertise and the technology for the Injectable Polio vaccine. The acquisition also changed the pediatric vaccine segment of the company towards the better. The infrastructure has seen a sea change over the years. Today this pioneer can boast of large bio reactors which help manufacture 2 to 4 million doses of vaccine. The tunnel systems, washing, filling and sealing assure a speed of 500 containers per minute.
